The UK authorities has included eleven further countries to its travel alert register concerning the threats of industrial alcohol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

This expanded travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, the government had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, after a number of serious cases like the tragic demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly used in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for human consumption.

Although it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

However in some countries, it is illegally mixed into spirits to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Government Guidance for Tourists

Government official Hamish Falconer said that all travellers should recognize the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"If you're consuming alcohol abroad, opt for reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," the official warned.

"Should anything appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."

The full list of nations identified as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
